Making the Cut

Those of us in the know are already well aware of just how special the Honda S2000 really is. There's simply nothing else quite like it, and we'll likely never be able to buy something similar ever again. That's precisely why S2000 values have skyrocketed in recent years, and it's also why the S2000 has made former Ferrari designer Frank Stephenson's list of eight affordable future classics.

Going Up

As we're well aware, calling the S2000 an "affordable classic" is a bit of a stretch these days. But there are still some good deals to be found out there. And as Stephenson notes, if you can find one for $7k or less, "if it moves, grab it, because this car is definitely going up in terms of value and iconic status."

Instant Classic

Stephenson notes that the S2000 looks just as good as its predecessors - the S500, 600, and 800, and is proportionately perfect. It's a design that will hold up for the next several decades and it was an instant favorite from the day it launched for those very reasons.

Pleasant Powerplant

Aside from the way it looks, Stephenson also praises the S2000's powerplant, that glorious four-cylinder that revs to the moon and back and sounds great while doing it, though he specifically mentions only the original F20C, not the later F22C.

Defining Characteristics

Other items of note that make the S2000 such a great car are its rear-wheel-drive configuration, near 50/50 weight distribution, and handling that can't be matched by most other sports cars out there in the world, whether they be old or new.

Rev Counter

Finally, as Stephenson points out, the S2000 is one of the first cars on the market that offered a digital rev counter, which is one of our favorite little touches, especially since we're talking about a machine that can rev to a lofty 9,000 rpm.

Continued Ascention

"I can see the values of this car steadily rising, year after year, and people definitely continuing to enjoy that very particular soundtrack of that VTEC engine," Stephenson says. And who are we to argue?
