Tire Pressure

While there is no blanket statement as far as psi goes for what you should run there have been studies done that show interesting data. While you might think significantly dropping air pressure will give you a larger tire patch it can cause the center of your tread to bow upward trapping water between the sidewalls. Not good. Companies like Hoosier have recommended pressures for their tires available online. Use these recommendations and adjust in small increments.

Spring Rates

Rain requires a car to transfer weight in a less aggressive manner than in the dry. Similar to your driving you want the car to handle things in the smoothest way possible to avoid over loading the tire and losing traction.

Camber

Less adhesion means less grip which means a reduction in negative camber can give the tire a better contact patch to work with. Everything in the wet is about maximizing traction and making sure the tire stays in contact with the road. Just like in the dry!

Aerodynamics

If you run aero devices that are adjustable you’ll want to crank them up to their maximum angles of attack to stuff the tires into the ground as much as physically possible. In a situation like this since top speed is likely to be limited you’re not going to be penalized by the drag this setup will induce. It’s all about making the car as stable as possible to give confidence to the driver and better cornering performance from the tire.

Sway Bars

It’s already common to see nationally competitive drivers completely remove the rear bar in the dry so you should not be running one in the wet. The can cause tremendous amounts of instability. Front bars should be reduced in size accordingly or removed if need be. This will depend on the particular track you’re racing on as well as the conditions on that particular day.

Summary

Wet setups in general are about adding compliance to the suspension without turning your car into an SUV. You can take things too far so experiment and find where the sweet spot is. This guide is a good starting point to point you in the right direction. Take it to the track and fine tune it to perfection. Until next time…
