Default Rear Brake Caliper Seized

Hi,

I have just been advised by Honda my rear near side brake caliper has seized. Any ideas on how much this would cost to replace as they have said need new discs and pads too and are quoting over £800 inc labour all in.

Can anyone suggest options or is this a good price?

Thanks

Should be able to get them reconditioned for about £140ish the pair - try biggred.co.uk or there are some threads about eBay traders that will exchange re-conditioned

£800 seems very expensive.

Changing a caliper should be no more than an hour, two at absolute most, work for a competent mechanic. Its also a job you can do at home fairly easily with standard tools and a can of WD40. You can pick up used but working callipers off eBay for around £70-80, new discs and pads for the rear are easily available for £90, again off eBay. So, all in for parts your looking at £180 tops. And 2-3 hours labour which you can either do yourself (plenty of online guides) or pay a local mechanic the going rate of around £40 an hour for 3 hours, so £120'ish in labour. All in, if you supply the parts, you should be looking at no more than £300. If you want new calipers then add another couple of hundred to that, but still nowhere near £800.

One of my rears was seized recently. The garage manage to unwind the piston using a hydraulic attachment and an extension. It was then lubricated with copper grease. Its working fine now.

Order your own discs and calipers from from HERE a rear caliper is £99 (you will need to send the old one back to them).

That's a £250 saving over the new caliper from Honda, and a big saving on the discs.

Buy the pads from Honda, as they are usually well priced (and compare your dealer price with these http://www.coxmotorp...8c7b09fee2382d6 Honda dealers are doing a price match service at present.

For those questioning the prices, a new caliper from Honda is £350 or so, which explains the high quoted price.

Thanks for the quick reply guys.

I only recently bought the car and staggered that the caliper has seized as would have hoped it would have been fone with MOT, history etc but guess it can happen anytime and the car is a 03 so 10 years old.

The price Honda has quoted is for 1 new caliper and new discs and pads and labour so just checked and caliper inc labour is £550 of the £800.

They also advised that they tried to clean up but it is completely seized and beyond repair hence new cost. I have 3 cars with the dealership so trust them on the work but just amazed at the cost of such a part.

Honda parts pricing can be very strange, some parts are very well priced and others eye-wateringly expensive, the calipers being a great example of the latter. (Fronts are nearly £500 each )

Most dealers are happy to fit owner-supplied parts, so get them ordered from brakeparts and Honda will sort you out. Having said that, if you get a quote from a local garage for the work, Honda have a price match offer on at present, so you should be able to save some on the labour too.

Won't copper grease damage the piston rubber seal?
