Default Ohlins Road and Track Review

Well, after months of research, reading, and reflecting on past experiences with a variety of coilovers on past cars, I decided to bite the bullet and get a set I've thought on and off about for years. The fabled Ohlins Road and Track DFV coilovers for my AP1 S2000.

The purpose of this thread will be to share my running experience with this setup, from initial impressions in opening the box, to the install, to the eventual road and track impressions (no pun intended). And for what it's worth, please excuse the blurriness of some of the photos, and my "unique" sense of humor when it comes to captioning them.

First Impressions and Installation

Ohlins have arrived! (Thank you Patrick from Urge Designs)

Off to the workshop ...

The wall of tires as you arrive at the Texas Track Works. What a sight.

Ahhh .... okay I'm ready for my goodies!

Here they are. The quality, finish, materials and workmanship on these is phenomenal.

Laid out neatly, ready to be put together.

Pure aluminium goodness.

Putting it all together ...

Measure ....

Adjust ...

Measure again ...

What can I say. Spencer is a bit of a perfectionist. More measuring ...

Adjusting the rubber dust boots.

Rubber boots are on. No need to cut them either! Perfect seal. (something I'd read quite a few people had done on an S2000)

They are ready! (and they look delicious)

Let's see now ... all we need to do it loosen this nut and ...

Spencer's superhuman powers are rarely captured on film. Until now.

Carbotech XP10 front brake pads getting installed.

Front and rear installed! Other than the pads, I had new Eibach swaybars and Russell stainless steel brake lines as well. (Notice that someone got stab-happy with a screwdriver in one of the shots )

And we're done!

The car is being aligned tomorrow, and there's still the matter of a radiator and hoses to go in. All going well, I hope to give you some exterior installed shots and initial driving impressions on the road before Sunday night!

Road Impressions

0-150 miles

Well, I've been putting some miles on the car over the last couple of weeks, around 120 to be exact. Before I get into my impressions, I do want to remind you that there is some bias, because I didn't just install the Ohlins, I also upgraded to Eibach swaybars, and installed 255 40 R17 tires at all four corners.

With that said, I'm in love. The car is completely different on the road. Where as before, If I was making a left hand turn at a set of lights, and I had to be very careful with the throttle, only tapping it as I went through so I wouldn't get the tail out, now, well, dare I say this but the car feels a lot closer to my old Evo. There is TONS of grip, the ride is flat, firm, but supple. I still feel the bumps in the road, but they are no longer bone jarring on the bad roads, it feels more "european" in that sense.

Ohlins only recommends a small preload and is noted in the install instructions. Ohlins is one of the few companies that actually drive tests their kits so they are tuned and set by them. You can adjust and add more preload based upon your set up and driving style. I know Gernby has a few custom mods on his.

PM us if we can help on the Ohlins..

I'd like a ride in your car when you're finished with it.
