Default Misfire, Cut-out and Non Start

Here is another opportunity for y'all to have a good think and speculate as to what's wrong with an S2000.

My car (65k 04MY) has been ticking over slightly unevenly for a couple of weeks which I put down to the hot weather, but running ok when driving. Yesterday I came off the M25 and it was very lumpy on tick over. I blipped the throttle and it appeared to clear it's throat ok. I pulled away without a problem; half a mile later it started to misfire badly, followed by cutting out, there was a CEL but I can't remember if it was flashing or solid (it was a very busy dual carriageway and I had other things to concentrate on). there was also a strong smell off electrical burning.

The car will turn over but it seems to be misfiring when doing so, if that makes sense, and won't start. My initial thinking is coil pack, but the AA man, and the specialist that the car has been recovered to, are of the opinion that it would still run on three, it'd just be as rough as fook. I remember one of Wifey's Clio's having a coil pack go and not starting at all, so I'm not convinced on that either.

Other info that might help; there is no obvious oil or coolant leak and there was no obvious bang or clonk to suggest a catastrophic mechanical failure.

Your thoughts please.

Do a compression test to rule out anything particularly untoward. Check the plugs for abnormal discolouration too.

Most importantly, get the codes read - this will give all concerned much more to work with.

When I had coil issues, it would start and run on three. It never cut out either.

Thanks for the offer Dan, it's with a specialist in MK, so he will have one.

(As pointed out on Facebook) ... you can buy a code reader on ebay for under £13.

Everyone should have one in the boot of their cars.

Ok, so I was partly right, well sort of...

The no. 2 plug worked loose and was eventually spat out which melted the coil pack. Unfortunately there is damage to the thread in the head which is reparable. The only other potential issue could be a power spike from the (very) burned coil pack feeding back to the ECU and damaging that.

I'll know more after the bank holiday. Fingers crossed there's no further damage...
