A Holiday in Devon
I suggested to the wife that we had a short break in South Devon and she said “I’d love to go back to the hotel overlooking the estuary in Salcombe!” I knew the hotel she was referring to. The rooms at the front of the hotel have balconies overlooking the estuary, which is a hive of activity, and you could spend hours just watching everything going on! I knew that the hotel had been closed for two years for refurbishment, so I logged onto their website to see what was happening. There was a large digital display on their home page counting down to their reopening in three days’ time, but, shock, horror, when I looked at their tariff for the period we had in mind it was £295.00 per night for a double room with breakfast!
That was definitely a ‘no go’.
Then I remembered that I had seen a hotel in Devon under the S2KUK Members’ Discounts column. I looked the hotel – The Sun Valley Hotel – up, and it looked promising. It was located in Hope Cove, not far from Salcombe, had a reasonable tariff, and, you got a 10% discount if you arrived in your S2000. It is a small family run hotel with just 14 rooms, with what looked like an ideal location. So I phoned and spoke to Michelle (the daughter), and the booking was made.
The journey from Hertfordshire to South Devon was made in awful weather, with heavy rain and high winds, but on arrival we found a warm and comfortable hotel awaiting us. The view from the bedroom window was stunning, in spite of the fact that the high winds were blowing the sea water over the sea wall.

How different things were in the morning, with no wind and a bright sunny sky.

We went down to breakfast to find a comfortable lounge and bright dining room, both offering super views of Hope Cove.

The weather for the rest of our holiday was bright and sunny, with the hood down each day. However, the roads in Devon are not for VTECing! For instance, the road between Hope Cove and Salcombe is so narrow and winding that I had to do three point turns on many of the hairpin bends; and, if something is coming the other way!!!
The picture shows us admiring the views in Salcombe.

Most evenings, whilst having dinner, we were entertained by hundreds of starlings swooping and circling over the hotel before dropping out of the sky to roost. And every evening the sunsets were stunning.

In summary, if you are looking for a hotel in Devon You probably won’t find anywhere to better the Sun Valley. Comfortable, welcoming, personal attention, excellent food (in enormous portions!), and a beautiful location with stunning views – it’s also on the South West Coast Path, for those who love walking – plus the fact you can get a discount!
