Default Piston oil squirters, check and inspect

I bought a spare block from a member on this forum, the engine mileage wasn't that high.
Just giving it a once over and checking everything, when I checked the piston oil squirters I found only 1 out of the 3 to be working properly.
Three of them rattled when shaken, the spring inside seems to have weakened and the ball inside just rattles around.
From what I understand they are quite critical and when the the engine is ticking over and the oil pressure drops below 28psi they should close to maintain oil pressure on the main and big end bearings.
I have a spare engine from a project I have started and when this was checked it also only had 1 out of 3 squirters working.
Just a note both engines had failed, one on main bearing and one had big end bearing failure.

Interesting , never even knew they had poppet valves in them , I can see the point though, after all the pistons only need extra cooling when the engine is working hard .
I wonder what the difference was in fact between the early ones and the ones fitted as a recall following number 4 piston failure on early engines , my engine had these changed

No both engines from UK cars, 2000 and 2005 models.

Interesting with the 2005 - they are meant to have the uprated bolts too !

That's a very interesting find.

It could help explain the frequency of run bearings round here.

I wonder if it's worth reporting it to Honda UK technical?

Might be worth people checking them next time anybody has the sump off, i'm sure you can get to them once the sump plate has been removed.
They are about £30 each to replace.

True, but most of us rarely take the sump plate off.

If it turns out to be more than a statistical anomaly, Honda might want to advise owners/dealers generally.

IIRC there is/was a recall done on all PFL S2000's to have the uprated oil jet bolts fitted. When I bought My S (2011) the service manager at My local dealer checked that particular recall had been done (it had) and said that he could get it done FOC if not !!

No; that only affected early cars and they jets were undersized.

This is an entirely different issue (it seems) and if so, could be a big problem. Especially if Honda is to re-introduce the NSX and later S1000 & S1500s over here, they might want to avoid a brouhaha.
