Just removed my CDV (clutch delay valve) today. Wow, what a big diff!

I removed the CDV on my previous S -- an AP2 -- before it was even fully broken-in. So I was still relatively new to the car back then, and didn't notice such little things.

When I got my second one, the clutch pedal's response was a tad slow in comparison, other than the clutch not "catching" the flywheel right away when I shift. I thought it was just a weak/slightly worn clutch, and maybe the clutch fluid was old ...

Finally got a chance to clean that up after 6 months on my current S, and heck, it feels like the spanking new AP2 that I had before!!! In fact, removing the CDV made daily driving nicer too. The AP1 flywheel + engine + CDV is a bit annoying; the revs drops quickly on the AP1, and combine that with the CDV, I actually need to shift faster on upshifts and hit the gas pedal harder on downshifts to compensate for that lag, or else the revs don't line up properly.

Anyway ... I've completely forgotten how annoying the CDV was. Ya, I know, this isn't news to 99% of you guys But if you haven't gotten rid of yours, then you may want to look into this

 

What does it exactly do? I don't know too much about it. Pros/Cons?

 

It's slips/delays your clutch engagement on launches and hard, high rpm shifts. Honda did this to remove stress on the diff. Also, it's only present on AP2's.

 

No worries, your 03 doesn't have it Only 04 and up models have it.

It's meant to delay the timing of the friction plate from pressing against the flywheel when you release the clutch pedal. The clutch feels as if it's slipping a little when you pop the clutch through shifts. Honda added this to the S2000 in 2004 to reduce the risk of people breaking the rear diff in hard launches, as the CDV slips the clutch a little.

Yeah, the engagement is so much better without the CDV.
But I wouldn't want to do the CDV mod again, though.

Actually, the CDV regulates the speed with witch the clutch plate engages, so you can't engage the clutch faster than a certain rate. It is there to prevent driveline shock. On fast redline shifts, the CDV and heavy flywheel (on AP2 S2000s) work to keep the clutch engagement relatively slow and keep the clutch from catching in a firm manner. The CDV is half the issue, the pp is the other. Its easier to remove the CDV, but the PP is the bigger issue imo.

 

i dont understand this issue. i didn't touch my cdv and i think the car feels fine. i'm able to land on vtec on my 1-2 shift and i dont smell my clutch burning after a hard drive. i need to drive someobody's ap2 with the cdv removed to see what the big fuss is about.
