Ap2 diff swap in ap1
Do this, remove one of the prop shaft bolt and see if you can fit a 10mm bolt in the prop shaft. If it fits, you should be able to swap the diff and not touch the flange. If it will not fit, you will need to change the flange.
The flange's lock nut, is nothing special about the nut. But how tight it is, really matters. The nut is on the end of the pinion and how tight the pinion is and how much "turning torque" is critical. So if you can avoid messing with this, avoid it. Otherwise I would find a shop in your area that can do it for you and do it right.
You will need a new lock nut, and an AP1 flange. If you want to swap flanges with me, I have a spare AP1 flange and I could use the AP2 flange.

I will get you some pics tomorrow... of different things i did. I am on the 3 diff so i have done this a few times lol... easiest way was just to use the bolts for an ap2 diff.

Perhaps I am understanding this wrong, and I apologize from bringing up an old-ish thread but I didn't want to make another thread for teh same topic.
Say my buddy has an AP2 and I have an AP1.
IF we wanted to trade diffs, we could simply swap diffs, and bolts mating the driveshaft to the diff and that is all?
I can't seem to find a definite answer.

if you get an ap2 dif, you should NOT disturb the flange.
SO...you would need and ap2 drive shaft, because the bigger 10mm bolts will not fit through the ap1 driveshaft's 8mm holes.
You should also get the AP2 10mm flange for the AP1 transmission. I guess you COULD put the little ap1 bolts through the bigger ap2 driveshaft holes, but you SHOULDN'T. not only is the bolt diameter different, but the bolt length is different.
AP1: 8mm bolts front and rear, different lengths (longer in back)
AP2: 10mm bolts front and rear, same length

Do you have a list of parts needed to do the AP2 diff into an ap1 swap? I know there's generally two ways, if you swap the flange, you'll have to recalibrate something I believe. Otherwise it's more expensive to purchase the driveshaft and such, which route is the better?
I handed my local Honda dealer my ap2 diff and had them swap the flange on it with my old ap1 for $50. When I replaced my trans with an ap2 I had that flange swapped as well. So I'm running an ap2 trans/diff with ap1 drive shaft. Been great, no issues to speak of as there shouldn't be if the work was done mindfully
