CHALLENGE - 76TA-S and 76TA-R Time Attack Exhaust
Challenge Engineering has been hard at work in the offseason making improvements to the S2000 time attack car. One of the areas we felt that needed improvement was the exhaust system. Because we compete in Redline Time Attack - Street Class, we are required to run a catalytic converter on the car. This immediately eliminates any off the shelf full header back systems for use in the series as they include a solid cat delete section. After trying 3 different exhausts on the car over 2 years we just could not find one that fit all of our needs. Issues we had with other models were: too small of piping, poor fitment, improper design, and material flaws. None seemed to meet all of our requirements and lacked in one category or the other. We took the best parts of all the exhausts we’ve seen over the years and kept what was good, and ditched what we didn’t like or need.
Development:
Many may or may not know, but the s2000 can use an 76mm ( 3in) exhaust system in the NA or turbo configuration. The car is capable of moving enough air to support its use and benefits on the street or race circuit. With more an more NA builds happening recently we felt there was a place for another good 3in exhaust on the market. Our particular S2000 uses engine and components from famed S2000 engine and header developer, Hytech. With all this power potential at our fingertips we had to step it up with a great free-flowing exhaust that not only performed, but was built to last, and easy for use to service and install both at the track, and in your driveway.
Our on staff fabricator went to work on the exhaust addressing all the things that were important to us:
- 76mm piping
- Catback bolt on design
- Quality high flow muffler
- Large resonator for drone reduction on S (street) models
- Proper clearance from the ground and floor board
- Fitment for all years S2000 AP1 - current AP2
- Reinforced brackets and hangers
- 2 pc. Design for easy installation and service trackside
- N1 competition style exhaust with turndown tip.
The result was the current TA-S and TA-R exhausts for the S2000!

Since our race car is not the typical customers car when it comes to the modifications, it made sense for us to use one of our mildly modded customers car's that is typical of what most people have done to their S2000.
On the dyno with the TA-S model, we saw solid gains of +5 whp peak, and +2 ft lbs. peak tq over the customers Apexi World Sport exhaust, a popular choice for many. Imagine if he started with a stock exhaust! Needless to say, we were all pleased with the results. Gains in HP and TQ were realized across the entire power band, even down low. Add a Hytech header and 3in test pipe for the ultimate NA monster!

The One we use on our time attack car retains the center resonator, and no rear canister. We did it this way for additional space when designing a diffuser. Cost would be the same as a TA-R if interested in us making a custom one for you the same specification.
