I'd like to start by apologizing. I'm sure this has been answered many times before but I didn't see it in the fluid guide or oil journals and it didn't come up in search.

I've put ~7000 miles on my car in the past couple years. I'm wondering whether I need to change my fluids based on time, not mileage. Here are my approximate last changes:

Engine Oil: 1 year (<1000 miles)
Tranny Fluid: 5 yrs (~30k miles)
Diff Fluid: ~2 yrs
Clutch/Brake Fluids: ~2yrs
Coolant: 6-11 yrs (pH test as of 2010 indicated it was still perfectly effective)

Are there any time-based rules for this stuff? Conventional wisdom seems to say oil should be changed every year, at least. I only drive my car in fair weather and I don't drive very hard, so my maintenance schedule should be "normal" (not "severe"). Thanks!

 

engine oil generally has about a 4-5 year shelf life in a sealed container. but once it's in the engine i'm not sure. obviously you are well below the mileage for an oil change but i probably wouldn't leave the same oil in the engine for more than a year just to be on the safe side.

honda doesn't recommend a tranny fluid change for 120k miles or 8 years! seems crazy to me but you are still under the miles/time for that.

honda recommends rear diff. fluid change every 30k miles so sounds like you are due for that.

honda recommends brake/clutch fluid change every 3 years regardless of mileages, so you are probably good on that one too.

coolant lasts a long time. up to 120k miles and 10 years depending...

visual inspection is good for all fluids. make sure they are looking clean and not getting muddy/dirty/discolored. then it's just making sure things feel/sound right. brake pedal is firm, shifts are smooth, clutch is smooth and not sticky, engine runs at normal operating temp, etc.

how many miles total on the car?

 

I'd change the oil at least once a year in your case, on my car I do it twice a year because I'm just OCD about fluid changes, I drive less than you. It also depends on the type of oil you are using, something like Amsoil can easily go one year, but a cheaper or average over the counter conventional oil might be good to swap out more frequently. Oil contains acids that form with use, most high quality oils can deal with the acids really well, but I like to change the oil a bit more frequently and not worry about the acids issue and trying to determine what oil has what TBN level etc....

I wouldn't take the tranny fluid 30k, most people find that shift quality deteriorates after about 7k-10k miles, the Honda fluid shears down in viscosity and might be the reason people experience a change over time. I change my tranny fluid once a year, it' cheap maintenance and with 60k on my car it shifts like it just rolled off the dealer lot, so I must be doing something right, I want to keep it that way given how many complaints others have on shift quality.

I also change my diff fluid once a year, despite low miles driven, once again it's cheap maintenance, with the small sump capacity of the diff. I don't want the fluid to shear down too much, trannies and diffs have a natural tendancy to shear fluids due to the meshing action of the gear teeth. I wouldn't let it go past 10k miles, though I generally go by the one year interval.

I've got my flame suit on to guard against those who are going to say I'm dumping perfectly good fluid down the drain, but hey there are worst things to worry about. I do recycle my oil in case anyone is concerned.

 

^ if you don't mind spending the money/time then it never hurts to change fluids more frequently than needed. certainly not changing them often enough can be far worse!

 

yeah, doing the changes myself costs me about $200.00 per year in total maintenance costs, including all fluids and oil filter (oil changed twice per year, and tranny & diff changed once per year. It's cheap maintenance as far as I'm concerned.

 

If you are a seasonal driver, then change your oil before it sits for awhile. The clean oil minus the contaminants is much better than leaving dirty contaminated oil in the sump. Change once per year.

 

I changed my oil yesterday. It sounds like none of my other fluids are in urgent need of changing. Thanks for your help guys.
