Default So I tested the umbrella theory on my CAI

i've seen more threads lately about people parking their S2k in the rain and having hydrolock occur because the water drains directly onto the intake filter. i decided it was time to add an "umbrella" to my CAI and at the same time test the theory about how rainwater drains on the s2k. i also used the recharge kit on my filter so it turned out to be more productive than i had planned.

you could either buy the umbrella off ebay for $11 before shipping or pick up a flower pot at the Nursery (10 cents a piece) like i did. the Nursery didn't actually charge me for 1 pot in case you are curious.

i cut the pot as needed and used 1 bolt at a pre-existing hole to hold it steady.

i realize this does nothing for submerging the filter in water but i wanted to test the ability to block water that drains through the hood and fender. keep in mind i already have this hole taped off to deter water from entering the bumper. i have been meaning to come up with a less ghetto fix for this hole but haven't gotten around to it.

i closed the hood and had somebody slowly pour a bucket of water at the gap between the hood and fender to simulate how the rain water might drain. you can see in the following pics that there was a continuous stream of water being deflected off the umbrella.

and of course the motivation for putting flower pots in my bumper...

edit: pictures fixed.

so will this help for sure as far as water from up top draining down on the filter? I know that submerging it would still cause the hydrolock but with this umbrella shield, I should be ok?? I really want a CAI but I have been afraid to do this, I was leaning towards the K&N FIPK but the CAI has more gains dont they? This is interesting, Im glad you shared this info with us . I bought the $11 umbrella from eBay and it fit just fine. Might be a little bit different with the 04-05 bumper.

I'll bet a lot of S2000 owners with the AEM/Injen type of CAI will be interested in this. I'm going to link this into the "FAQs" in Techical. Thanks.

holy up angle on that intake batman!

no wonder i hear about this so much. the angle on my 4IG intake is parallel to the ground, not upwards like that AEM. is that a design of the AEM?
