SLICKS in the S2000 Challenge???
OK, i found out through sources that Hayashi is planning on running slicks in the PRODUCTION class.
As the moderator of the classing for this challenge series I didn't know slicks were 2 seconds faster than Hoosiers. Just as Hoosiers are 2 sec. faster than RA-1's, Kumho's etc. So the question is do we want to allow slicks only in the UNLIMITED class and limit the "non-spec" competition tires allowed in MODIFIED and PRODUCTION to DOT tires? Which I suppose just means Hoosiers.
Some have said that they assumed that DOT was implied. I had thought Hoosiers were basically slicks that had gotten DOT approval.
Anyway. It's not just my fear of losing to Hayashi, but my sincere interest in making this series, like all competitive motorsports events, as fair as possible
.
pipe in.

To be consistent with the points system, you could assign higher points to slicks, such as 150 or 175 points, so the choice is still there on what modifications someone can choose to stay in Production at 200 points max. (already out of Mod), or else compete in Unlimited. Seems based on DavePK's experience that running slicks with no other mods might be risky (other factors will become limiting to speed), and are slicks alone faster than Hoosiers' plus coilovers?
Believe it or not, I actually agree with Aaron on this one. In the other Challenge Series' which I class, slicks are different than R-compounds, and not interchangeable. Here is some hard evidence:
James Gunn 49 02:01.974 86.773 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 2001 Race 385
Gary Thomason 11 02:04.458 85.041 Chevrolet Corvette 1999 Race 375
2 National-champ drivers on the same day. James is running slicks, Gary is running Dot-R's. This is an almost perfectly equal comparison. James' car is setup for a class which allows a little more mod, but nothing which would account for > .5 sec (slicks not legal for that class, btw). I say the slicks were worth 2 sec a lap at Buttonwillow.
You guys either need to charge more for slicks, or you need to limit them to higher classes, or everyone will have to run slicks to compete (maybe not so bad, actually).

dt, just read your first post again, and I feel it's important to still charge more points for Hoosiers than for other DOT-R's since we know they are faster, otherwise everyone in MOD and PROD will be forced to use Hoosiers (to be competitive), and some have already invested in other DOT-R tires for 2003, and alreadystarted the season with them at Sears.
richard,
yes, we would make spec. comp. tires = 50, non-spec. DOT tires = 100, and non-spec non-DOT (slicks) = 150.
That's just one option. we could outlaw them altogether. we'll need more people, including the trouble-maker himself, to weigh in.

yeah I am not sure slicks will work so well on stock suspension.
So if hooisers are 2 secs faster than spec tires and cost 50 pts more, I guess slicks being 2 secs faster than hooisers should be an additional 50? That would make them 150.
