New Honda Hybrid S2000 Beat-er?

We have been waiting for an S2000 successor for quite some time. Rumors have piled up and many renderings were considered to be a good sign of what will come next. However, we are living in “the future of the automotive industry” and hybrid technology becomes more popular and more practical. Honda plans to create an S2000 successor (or not?) based on a hybrid plant and on the 1991 Honda Beat mini convertible. A platform version of a modified Jazz (Fit) is rumored to be used. We believe that the new hybrid roadster will not be as powerful as the S2000, but the specs look promising and the new roadster will be able to accelerate from 0-60mph within 6 seconds!

Not bad for a hybrid car, don’t you think? We assume that an aluminum frame will be used to reduce weight and that a 50:50 weight distribution will be achieved by fitting one motor each to the front and rear. Let us hope that the R&D department is working hard on this one!

I heard it’s suppose to be FWD… so only thing really common with an S2000 would be two-seater, drop top… crickets.. oh HID lights…

Kinda of reminds me of a….. Del Sol!!

    No thanks…. next!!!

What has become of the Honda I used to love? I am not a fan of this automotive industry future you speak of.

Less power, not as good looking, probably FWD…. Could it be more lackluster?

    They have this already.

As a Civic hybrid and S2k owner, I can say that both have their purpose, but I don’t want them combined. My Civic is a great car, but the driving experience is weak, disconnected, numb and utilitarian – which is what I expected for the 50 mpg I’m getting in return. On a side note, I think Honda needs to cool it with all of these new hybrid offerings. In fact, wouldn’t the CRZ fill the niche “sporty hybrid” market anyway? (if there is such a thing?) They could make that a drop top if they felt the need. Honda already has the Civic Hybrid, Insight and now the CRZ, I think it’s safe to say they have the hybrid market covered. What’s left, a 4 cyl Accord Hybrid to compete with the Camry Hybrid? That makes more sense.

Not to sound overly critical, but anything less than a proper sports car (RWD, 50/50 weight distribution and powered by an efficient yet high revving 4 or 6 cyl WITHOUT IMA!!) just wont be a true S2k replacement. My S2k is everything the Civic hybrid isn’t and that’s why I love it. Come on Honda, build it the right way or don’t build it at all..

Well as the saying goes, if you have nothing positive to say about it then don’t say anything……..

You guys have no imagination. Who says it is FWD? How do you know it won’t be RWD or AWD for that matter? How about 4 electric motors or 2 electric motors?

I left my S2000 and won’t return until Honda comes out with something at least mildly exciting, glad at least Toyota seems to be moving in the right direction.

@Chris. It’s not something nice, it’s constructive criticism. Also, hybrid technology is nowhere near practical, so far it’s an engineering clusterf#$%.

I like the idea of a hybrid – seen the Tesla like it but it has no range. Issue I have with this if it looks anything like the picture is that it looks like a Chrysler knock-off
