Open Diary

We see (and read) all sorts of build threads here in the S2Ki Forums. But when we came across this one from member mysteryjedi, we were intrigued. Mostly because it's quite different than your average build thread. In fact, it's more of what the poster calls a "diary." And like most diaries, it's quite interesting to read.

Japanese Origin

The other unique thing about this particular S2000 is that it's not an American example. "I picked up my JDM '99 S2000 in August," mysteryjedi said. "It's got just over 66k miles on it and stayed with the last owner for 16 years. It came will all MOTs and tax discs, a load of receipts, and some Japanese documentation. She’s standard apart from an ‘uprated’ sports clutch, a Cobra alarm, and a different stereo."

Sunday Funday

Pretty cool stuff, indeed. And the nice thing is, mysteryjedi will have plenty of opportunities to wrench on the car, too. "She's been bought as a fun day/Sunday car for me to tinker with as I've still got my daily driver to use. Not entirely sure what the end product will be (do we ever reach the end?) but part of the fun is the tinkering! She might get a wee run out at Knockhill in due course, but there are a few jobs to check off the list before then!"

Drive It

Simply driving this S2000 was first on the list, because apparently that hasn't happened much recently. "I also wanted to take her for a decent run as she'd only done 200 miles between her MOT in 2018 and 2019, and another 400 the year before. So I took her down to my sisters near Preston for the weekend. I also managed to book some time in at Vtec Direct in Winsford, who used to look after an Accord Type R I had a few years ago."

Basic Maintenance

It was there that mysteryjedi got a pretty clean bill of health for his new ride. "They looked her over and, other than a bit of rust in the normal places, reckoned she looked sound! The brake and clutch fluid was flushed because it was black, the throttle cable was adjusted, the clutch slave cylinder was given a clean and grease, and all that immediately made things feel a bit more taught behind the wheel. We also chucked in a new air filter."

Brake Upgrades

With that out of the way, mysteryjedi could focus on making some upgrades. "Also decided I wanted to upgrade the brakes. After lurking on here I read about the Accord Type R front brake upgrade. So I bought some calipers on eBay. They didn’t seem to be moving very freely, so I pulled out the pistons and seals. There was a bit of corrosion inside so they've been stripped fully and are going to Bigg Red to be sandblasted and rebuilt. When they're back, I'll put new discs and DS2500 pads on, and braided hoses too probably. Might get a master cylinder brace too."

Future Plans

Next, mysteryjedi picked up a set of lowering springs. His plans for the future include changing out the wheels and stereo, as well as finishing up a full service on the car. We're certainly intrigued to see where this build (ahem, diary) goes moving forward. So be sure and head over here to stay tuned for future updates!
