Dual Purpose

Optima's Ultimate Street Car Association (USCA) has been around for a few years now, pitting all kinds of cool and fast street cars against each other for bragging rights. These dual-purpose machines are all pretty impressive in their own right, but in our book, none can hold a candle to Kevin Schultz's 2008 Honda S2000 Club Racer.

Unique Entry

Schultz built his CR for a specific class in SCCA competition, but it has actually shown itself to be quite competitive in the GTC (compact) Class. It's also quite unique, as the Club Racer is an inherently rare vehicle here in the U.S., to begin with. Regardless, that doesn't stop Schultz from driving it like Honda intended the car to be driven.

Perfect Base

As Schultz points out, the Club Racer is perfect for this sort of competition, however. It responds well to tuning and suspension changes, and it makes enough horsepower to propel its weight around the track nicely. Thus, in this case, the engine is stock, while most of the money Schulz has spent has gone into the suspension.

Adding Lightness

Those upgrades including adjustable coilovers, bigger sway bars, and new bushings. Schultz has also removed as much weight as possible from the S2000, installing a set of racing buckets and removing the air conditioning in the process.

Perfect Balance

With all of these upgrades completed, Schultz reports that the car is very pointy and exhibits no understeer whatsoever. It's an extremely balanced vehicle, and one that's perfectly suited for autocross and pretty much any kind of track he wants to take it on and compete with.

Good at Everything

Those upgrades also make it a fantastic dual-purpose machine, though the lack of air conditioning might irksome in the summer months. But in that case, simply drop the top and enjoy the breeze, we say. After all, it's a small price to pay for a nearly perfect on-track performer.
