Default Brake Caliper Tool Recommendation

I'll be changing out the rear brake pads soon and read up on the DIY. One recommended tool is a "brake caliper tool'. Of those of you who change out your own brake pads, what tool do you use? I have a little time to shop, as the rear pads are down to 4mm now, and I'd like to tackle this job in the next couple of weeks. This will be my first pad change on the S and I'll take any tool tips or recommendations anyone has.

I just use my hand to press the piston back in. It literally takes like 10 minutes to swap out pads. Some people use a bent coat hanger to hold the caliper up while you change the pads, Sandeep showed me that and I find it very helpful.

This is the fronts of course except I changed out the rotor.

Can someone confirm if these are the tools that will be sufficient to replace the AP2 rear brake calipers? All the DIYS state different tools, and some talk about needing a 10mm flared nut wrench, etc.. Thanks!


1) 12mm ratchet wrench
2) 17mm wrench

To reset the rear piston, use a 1/2" ratchet to turn the piston and it will slowly retract into the caliper. Make sure to line the guide up with the round protrusion on the pad's backing plate when installing.

That'll work but you've got to do it carefully to not strip the corners on the piston. A tool like this gives you more leverage, putting more of the rotational torque away from center:

The rear pads were measured at 4mm. What is the limit to go down to before replacing the pads? The front pads are 7mm.

I have one of those and I hate it. I am going to buy something better for the next brake job I have to do, which will probably be after next weekend. I think the carbotechs will be done after this track event.

I figure that if I'm just going to change pads for a day/weekend at the track, I should not need to change rotors. Since my S is mainly for street and highway use with limited time on a track, shouild I also change my rotors or have my existing ones resurfaced?
