Go to:
Control Panel
Network Connections
SELECT your Network Interface Connection - probably called "Local Area Connection" (double click)
Click Properties
Double Click "Internet Protocol TCP/IP"
In there:
Check "Use the following IP address"
IP Address: 192.168.0.2
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.0.1
Do the same on the other machine but use IP Address 192.168.0.3
If you have a proper crossover CAT5 cable (they are sold at Fry's for about $4) - you should be able to map a network drive from your new laptop. However, you will first need to share the drive you want to copy the data from on the ex's laptop.

hm.... so i did all of that and it still wont let me see the the ohter computer. When i try to goto view network groups. it wont let me.. AHAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
