Default Computer Question

Anyone have any experience hooking a laptop to a TV. Have a HDTV with a HDMI input. Went and got a DVI to HDMI cable and hooked it to the tv (and computer), didn't work. Played with the display settings many times and never got it to work. I know about Fn F7 also, and it is not the toggle between monitor and display. Anyone know how to make it happen?

Take a look here...best forum online for theatre related info for the do-it-yourselfer..

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/forumdisplay.php?f=26

This one talks about home theatre computers, but if you back out to the main one you will see tons more info..

You can find many posts regarding frequency settings for HD monitors and potentially info about the specific video card in your laptop and your HDTV.

AVS is the best forum to read about this stuff. However, they are in serious need of a site redesign and a color change.

You can change your own forum colors on AVS as a member...

That makes sense. I went to the forum wondering how people could stand that color combination.

I have heard that AVS is a great forum.

Let me know how this turns out for you. My DLP has computer input and I am considering a docking station for the laptop in the entertainment electronics.

The resolution setting on the laptop is probably not compatible with the TV. When I hook my computer up to my LCD TV and the video card is set at the wrong resolution I get a blank screen that says No Support in the upper corner. The TV is really picky on resolutions too, something like 1280x720 will work while 1280x768 won't.

Resolution could be a factor and so could a driver. Two TVs I have require a driver on the PC for them to work.

Just picked up from the post that John uses an IBM laptop. Function F7 is used on my IBM laptops to change the display but it is different on my Dell.

Tried it with several different laptops. Basically took the approach of using a DVI male to HDMI. With my newer laptop, I could get a picture, but could not get it to work at 1280 x 768. My computer would lock up and I would have to reboot. It did work at 720 x 480 (I think those are the correct numbers) but the picture was so big and ugly (grainy, ragged edges, etc).

So, it seems like it can be done, but I think it would need a much more robust video card than I have on this laptop
