Generally metro Phoenix doesn't have a lot of really bad areas. Basically stay away from south Phoenix and you're probably okay. I agree with dawick777 for the nicer areas but those are well established and will cost you. There are a lot of newer communities with nice new homes for a lot less cash.

Where's your new job? I might know something about that area.

The younger crowd is in the Ahwatukee, Chandler, Tempe area which is just as nice as what Dawick said.

Rule of thumb:
Look up central Phoenix (eg. the city center).
Trace a 20 mile radius around it.
Don't live there.

eye doctor. gotta be able to get to the hospital in reasonable amount of time.

heard good things about ahwatukee, tempe, etc.

starting out so don't have $$$$, yet.

thanks for the responses.

Also, I suppose I should also decide based on how far away from earnhardt's I would be?

Earnhardt's is in Avondale / Goodyear area. Since you don't have to go to Earnhardt's every day... I should think it be a non-factor.
Just for the record, I would NOT live near central Chandler. Indications are that the gang activity is picking up.
There are a couple new hospitals out in the SE valley and lots of new construction. At this current place in time, the incentives for a new construction home are more attractive than buying an established used home. So, be sure to check in to a new neighborhood if possible.

Good Luck,
