Smog test
Time is coming up to get a smog. Don't know how stringent AZ is with smog tests. Currently running a Berk HFC, and would preferably like to keep it on as it can be a somewhat of a pain to remove.
It's been 15 years since I lived in AZ... How strict are they on someone who has an EMS? I know I can pass the tail pipe sniffer, but I have some things that I won't be able to hide (AEM EMS, no cat, no EVAP). It's mostly a track car, but nice to take on the street every once and awhile.
I have never had anyone crack the hood on an OBD II vehicle or visually check for emissions equipment. They would simply check the cap and plug it into the scanner and then tell me I passed (no error codes and all readiness checks passed of course). If you can pass the readiness checks, I would say you should be fine 99% of the time. Of course if you register the car outside Tucson and Phoenix, you can skip the emissions check all together. My MR2 is registered in Flagstaff for 5 years with no emissions checks necessary.

It sounds like I'll either not legally drive it on the street or just register it elsewhere.

They are going to be very strict in that case. They can't just "pass" you without reading the ECU. Unless you have a serious hookup then it's not going to happen.
On the flip side, it is extremely easy to get a gross polluter through as long as they can read the ECU and there are no codes. As mentioned, I've never had them conduct a visual inspection of any kind despite the smell and sound from a supercharged car.
FYI, you are also exempt if you have collector car insurance.

Quick follow up question then. I know you need a car to be able to pass smog, but what if I go without a car? Do you guys think they will pass me? How strict are they?
