Default local "good" roads

thought i'd share some of my favorite roads in the local area, and hope that you will make your suggestions.

with shreveport home base, the following are easy drives.

the closest to shreveport, is just a short drive south on hwy 171 to gloster, then hwy 5 east to hwy 175. i often back track hwy 5 because of the nice surface and curves. i've noticed a greater than normal population of hwy patrol on this road, so enjoy the curves, but let caution be your guide on high speed breathers.

slightly farther, but much more interesting is hwy 346 . take i49 south to exit 162, which is hwy 177 west. then follow 177 to hwy 175 north, and hwy 346 east. 346 is the best of these roads. once again i've been known to back track 346, and the eastern part of hwy 177.

not to forget the northern part of the state, hwy 518 below Claiborne lake. go to homer, eat at the restaurant at the intersection of hwy 79 and hwy 2, then east on hwy 2 to lisbon, hwy 518 south to hwy 146. this is a terrific road. hwy 146 back to homer is nice

now, back to the south, longleaf vista road in the national park. go to bellwood on hwy 117 continue south and go east on the longleaf trail. this is Kisatchie national park. beware the green jeep Cherokees, but fine is only $15 and no points. how did i learn that?

the BEST road in La. is hwy 126 between nickle and manifest. there is no good way to get there, but once there you will not want to leave. to find the general area, look north east of Jena. this is a 300 mile round trip, but truly a great road.

the following are not local drives, but worth an overniter.

there are many terrific roads north of hot springs in ark (i haven't found a bad one up there). the very best that i've found is hwy 341 between mountain home and mtn view. a recent find is hwy 123 east of ben hur.

the Texas hill country is great also, let fredricksburg be your hub.

have fun, and please advise me of your favorites.

thanks

doug
