Keeping phone number when disconnecting
Is it possible to disconnect your phone and keep your number till you wish to reconnect it and use it with someone else?
I'm under the understanding, that unless you port your number to a new provider, you number will revert to the original issuing company upon disconnection. Is this how it works?
What if you paid like $10000 for a super awesome number, surely they can't just take it off you if you disconnect?

I think it has a lot to do with changing exchange locations, like moving out of the original exchange when you reconnect. But initially you can hold on to the old number for as long as you want with a redirection in place to another number (mobile or land) as I did for 12 months.

Ok, the main reason I'm asking is because a lot of people call their phone company and threaten to disconnect their phone in the hope of pushing them for a better deal.
Of course, you normally need to actually ask them to disconnect to get anywhere. The problem is, that if they call your bluff, and disconnect you, there goes your number.
IF you port your number to a new carrier for a better deal, you can't use that to push for a better deal, as it just happens before they even realise you're leaving them.
