from the reviews, teh gps is slow to startup, apparently takes at least a minute or 2 to get its bearings.

is it also true that it charges whenever u access the gps??

you would be much better off with Nokia N95.

I don't know. I was looking one that belonged to somebody else last night and he said the guy in the store turned off a feature where the GPS reverts to the telco's network after 30 minutes.

He swears he doesn't get charged for GPS but I'm not so sure. It did take a minute to get it's bearings when initially turned on but that doesn't seem like a big problem.

For what reasons JAPCAB? Can you elaborate further? Have you tried both? I'm looking for a GPS and if I can get one in a phone that performs as well as a stand-alone unit that would save me carrying around two bits of hardware. :-)

From what I can see you need to buy a seperate GPS module for the N95 whereas the 6110 has everything built into the phone.

saving having to carry a dedicated gps and the phone is always a bonus, but a dedicated gps is a lot quicker. i would relly need to have a play around with the phone first.
how much r they nowadays?? and has any other phone company introduced one yet, because ive been reading that gps in phones r the next step

Dude, I have the n95. The GPS feature in it is a bit sucky. The inbuilt Maps program is lackluster when compared to Tom Tom and the likes. Yes you can install Tom Tom, however you need an external Bluetooth GPS receiver. Kinda defeats the purpose. I'm still trying to find the hack for Tom Tom to work with the inbuilt GPS. Other than that the phone absolutely rocks.

6110 unfortunately I haven't played with it so I can't really help you there. But I don't think its Symbian, so if you don't like the inbuilt GPS program you can't change it or try and install a new one.

Currently out there is the HTC p3600i (aka Dopod 810x). At around $995, its windows mobile 6, 500 processor, mini sd expandable with inbuilt GPS that works with Tom Tom. A mate has it here at work and its pretty bloody good. Finds the GPS satellites faster then my N95.

I'm a bit green about how these GPS units work.

I understand that a normal GPS unit accesses satellites to plot it's progress.

Does a phone GPS use GSM to access a server or something to do the same?

Nope. They access satellites as well. you can actually watch the phone try and triangulate with satellites. It will show bars of progression as it connects to a minimum of 3 satellites.
At least on the n95 is does anyway.

I have the Dopod 838pro with external GPS and Tomtom 6. It's a great nav system thanks to Tomtom and great for SMS because of the Qwerty keyboard but not the best phone.
