Come on, that dog's begging to be walked.

Don't get too hung up on contrast ratios quoted by marketing departments. They bear no relationship to reality and can't be compared between makers, let alone different screen types.

Save yourself some money and get more for your dollars.

Plasma is nice but the 84" image from my projector is 4 times the size of a 42" plasma.

I managed to get a "corporate special" deal on a Dell projector. Yes, it's only SVGA resolution, but it cost me less than $1k and frankly my eyes aren't good enough to be able to tell the difference between HD and SD digital. There is NO comparison with the 68cm CRT it has supplanted.

I created my own screen by "painting" a section of my wall then making my own velvet frame to hide shadows. I reckon it works brilliantly!

In the meantime the 68cm still does service for watching the news and regular viewing.

Blackie,

U must do it man, I mean afterall you have an S2K in the garage may as well complement the inside of the house with a Plasma Panel.

I bought the 50 inch Pioneer (HD Model) nearly a year ago and it rocks.

When you watch HDTV, it is similar to the feeling you get when you went from VHS to DVD for the first time, only this time your DVD looks crap and the free to air digital is amazing.

I looked around for a while before going with the Pioneer, but to me it won hands down, firstly it looks great with the polished balck frame, HD picture is great, 5 year warranty (including a replacement panel if something goes wrong).

If you a contemplating going the 42 inch I would striongly encourage you to spend the little bit extra and go the 50 inch and also make sure it is a HD model - or in my opionion you are wasting your money with SD crap. The next gen DVD are going to be HD so you may as well get ready for it now.

Good Luck !!

I notice you live in Melbourne.

For a good deal on a plasma go and check out Klaap Audio Visual on Chapel St (Windsor end).

I got mine from there and they kicked JB-Hi Fi's ass on pricing, although I see dbzerk has made you an offer of cost pricing.

Cheers,

I perfectly understand your lust. I was in the same boat last year when I moved back from the US. But after trying out an SD Digital set top box I realized that the quality was so much better than analogue TV that it was good enough improvement already. Widescreen is nice but a CRT can do that...

Whatever happened to good old fashioned imagination?

In the days of Black & White movies we used to depend on good scripts and good acting whereas nowadays it's all special effects. Try watching Casablanca and Terminator 2 and tell me who is the best actor out of Humphrey Bogart and Arnold Schwarzennegger.

Try watching Dr Zhivago and 2Fast 2Furious and tell me which has the most drama and meaningful script.

blackie, I suggest you don't waste your money on fancy TV sets. Perhaps spend a year raising the level of your cultural appreciation by reading some classical literature.

After 1 year you may decide to watch even less TV, or if you do decide to go back to TV, the cost of the sets will be significantly cheaper.

A lot of people here advocate the HD setups however not many free to air shows broadcast at HD and I don't have Foxtel Digital. A lot of ED or SD units can display an HD image with relatively minor distortion to the naked eye. I thought about a projector as well but it just doesn't have the same allure as a big flat shiny screen.

The Pioneer models look beautiful and would be the pick of the bunch but they're still a little pricey.

Red Rover, you raise an interesting (and sobering) thought. Many times I have tried to get into books but they always end up untouched or I choose the tube instead. It's just so much easier to turn on the TV or pop in a DVD, get your couple of hours worth of audio/visual entertainment and be satisfied. Maybe it IS time for a change?

Blackie, Foxtel only broadcasts in SD not HD.
