Default Plasma TVs

Harvey Norman's 48 month interest free deal and my lust for a brand spanking new sexy 106cm Plasma TV is beginning to sound as easy and as rudimentary like a trip to Coles for a litre of milk. I have only recently purchased a new 68cm Panasonic CRT TV however DVDs are becoming a sore point when only half the screen is used and I'm missing out playing GT4 in all its 480p widescreen godliness.

There are some really cheap ones (<$3k) such as LGs and other "unheard of" brands surfacing but even some more decent units such as Panasonic at under $5k are becoming tempting. Or should I just go walk the dog more often and forget about my large screen, flat screen, widescreen, high definition fantasies?

Walk the dog more often. It's free, and it's good for you.

Keep in mind that they only last about 5 years, due to the gas burnout or some crap along those lines.

Another option for you may be a projector for that home movie experience - the main considerations here are the brightness, contrast, and resolution.

If you're going to get one, then get one that is high-definition (ie. ~1024 pixels across) ... otherwise you're only getting a slighlty better and bigger TV than what you've got ... might as well get a much cheaper rear-projection screen that is even bigger and probably for only ~$2k. Though, getting a high-definition plasma adds about a $2k - $3k to the prices you're quoting.

From what i know is that each Plasma TVs have hours as a life.

some come with 13000 hours, some come with more or less..

But then again, after 5 years.. there will be a new model come out. and you might as well upgrade them..

Why do you say that? The problem with LCDs is that they don't come in larger sizes and those that eventually do will cost a mint. Also, an inherent problem is the delay time in LCDs which can cause a ghosting image when watching fast action movies. And the contrast ratio is a lot lower meaning they don't display black all that well and hence images don't look as sharp as a plasma (LCD is around 700:1 as opposed to plasma being around 3000:1).

Methinks you're set on getting a plasma. I say why not. Get a Fujitsu or a Sony plasma. You won't regret it.

My mate has had a Sony Plasma since 2001. It's still going strong. He bought a line doubler when he bought the plasma too. Soooo very schmick.

Well plasma has its problems too, that being potential image burn-in, heavy power usage and potential to lose its clarity in 5+ years. My lust for a plasma (or LCD) is just that at this stage. Just seeing if others here had one and could comment on its value and contribution to their overall quality of life.
