... and wipe his arse with a rabbit

Bear comes across a rabbit in the woods. Says to rabbit: "Excuse me, Mr Rabbit. Do you have a problem with shit sticking to your fur?" "No" the rabbit replies. Bear smiles and pats rabbit then picks him up proceeds to use rabbit as tp. "Then I'm sure you wont mind...... thanks Mr Rabbit".

I think this needs cartoon to close the deal but its as funny as apple pie IRL I promise.

Seriously, oldie but a goodie.

I prefer the punch line "Bear picks up rabbit and wipes his arse with it."

Cars like the lotus elise use very short gear ratios.....i think the top speed is around 180km/h mark.
The Elise has awesome power to weight which is why it's quick to from 0-100. It's top speed is limited by the fact that it actually has bugger all power (88kW in the original) and torque in absolute terms and thus it can't overcome wind resistance at high speed.

The point I was trying to make here are:

1. Different gears will never ever give you acceleration advanatge at all speeds (and between all speed increments).

2. In some speed increments (and to some speeds) the stock gearing will make the car quicker, in others shorter gearing will make it quicker, in yet others taller gearing will make it quicker.

3. An outcome of a race between S2000 with stock gearing and one with different gearing (whether shorter or taller) will always depend on the start speed and the distance/speed that you run up to.

Exactly!

In a short-distance straight-line "race" from a standing start the result will depend on where you draw the finishing line. 400m, 1 Km, 2 Kms??? From a rolling start there are too many variables to accurately predict the result.

On a track (circuit), say doing 5 laps (IE 15-25 Kms) the only way you could compare would be to have the same driver driving each car and comparing lap times. It would have to be on same day and both cars would have to be otherwise identical - eg same tyres etc.

IMHO an S2000 with the standard 4.1 FD is faster around Winton than an S2000 with 4.44 or 4.77 because the 4.1 has a critical advantage through the three U-Turns at the back of the circuit.

At Phillip Island IMHO I believe the 4.44 has an advantage in that it allows you to fully wind out in 5th and get into 6th down the main straight. It also lets you fully wind out in 4th and get into 5th between southern loop & Honda corner as well as between Siberia & Lukey Heights.

It would be very interesting to try a 4.77 at Phillip Island. It would mean that you would never use 2nd gear. It would allow you to use 3rd gear (in V-Tec) through the two slowest corners (Honda & MG). However, if you took the last corner onto the main straight at at a good high speed you'd be hitting the rev-limiter in 6th before the end of the straight.
