its pretty much neck to neck, however it does seem to slightly pull away end of 3rd and thru 4th... however that was on a rolling start. I believe the S might get a better start on a Z; but haven't tried it as yet...

I agree with AustBlue. from what I know they are pretty close.

The day i was at ECreek there was a Z turning laps at 2:06 and the guy was a bit of a jerk. From the way he was describing his driving I thought he could shave 2-4 seconds off the time.

Since most of the guys here turn laps at around 2:02 that would put the Z pretty much equal with the S.

The main feature of the 350Z Track model is the better brakes. In purely standard form the S2000 would have a significant braking advantage over the 350Z Touring model and this should result in faster lap times.

In purely standard mode I would expect the Z Track model to be line ball with an S2000 but I would be most interested to hear DavidM's comments. He would know better than anyone else.

The 350Z has so much torque that it just takes a few simple mods (such as exhaust) to free up the revs and release a lot more power. It should also be easier to find some weight reduction in the Z rather than the S.

So if you're purely after speed & perfomance a $65,000 350Z track with $10,000 worth of mods will be significantly faster than a $75,000 standard S2000.

I was on the track with a grey 350Z at Phillip Island on 3 April this year. I had no hope of keeping up with it. It was much too fast. I never spoke to the driver but when I walked past it in the pits the only visible mod was the roll cage & harness. Not 100% sure now but vaguelly recall tyres were Bridgestone 540s.

Chuckie, search though this forum and you'll find a lot of my observation between the S2000 and 350Z. Here's a couple that you might find interesting:

Yeah, in standard trim there shouldn't be much between them IMHO. In straightline I would go as far as to say that the S2000 is actually quicker ... in particular in the 1st two gears. At speeds over 100kph, I'd say that the Zed has a slight advantage.

As far as on the track performance goes for 100% stock cars, then we have Cameron McConville times from Winton:
- 1:43.1 for the 350Z Track
- 1:44.1 for the S2000

I was actually surpised to see the Zed 1sec qucker, but it was on two separate days. Still even with that it looks like the Zed has a slight advatage even at Winton. Though, this is the one with big Brembos, wheels and tyres (ie. Track model). Also, what probably what makes some of the difference is all the torque coming out of the corners as that is where the S2000 was lacking (even when kept inthe optimum gear).

Generally speaking, on longer tracks (ie. Phillip Island) I'd expect the 350Z to be quicker, and on shorter thacks (ie. Winton) I'd expect the advatage return to the S2000 .... that is despite the observation in the above paragraph.

The 350Z has so much torque that it just takes a few simple mods (such as exhaust) to free up the revs and release a lot more power. It should also be easier to find some weight reduction in the Z rather than the S.

Totally correct. The S2000 is hard to make quicker. We've had people here who have done exhaust, brakes, suspension, but the most difference on the track is seen just from the R-spec rubber and allignment. On the other hand, I just put wider (R-spec) tyres on my 350Z and a custom exhaust and I was good 1.5sec quicker around Winton than any S2000 has managed so far ... and that was just my 1st outing. Not only that, but 3.6sec quicker than I have ever managed in the S2000 (though the S2000 never had R-spec tyres). Here are more details about that (for Chuckie):

http://forums.s2ki.com/forums/showthread.p...threadid=205769

The torque out of corners makes big differnce as well as the sheer grip/stability of the car. It was just so rock solid everywhere compared to the S2000. S2000 takes a lot more effort to drive hard as it 'fidgets' a lot and you need to be always mindfull of the rear-end. Took me over 2 years to finally tame the rear end to my liking and that was done by putting stickier tyres at the back.

As far as the speed difference between the S2000 and 350Z (with the exhaust) goes at Winton, I was managing low 170s kph in the 350Z on the main straight, while in the S2000 low 160s kph. That is due to the punch out of the corner as well as the top-end thanks to the exhaust.

My 350Z is still not 100% to my liking. It still needs more front camber (ie. more front grip), and that'll cost me about $500, and should make it even more balanced/neutral. Then I'd love to replace the seats with something not only lighter, but also grippier ... but then I'm not sure if I'll ever do that.

The big difference between the vehicles is that when you take a can opener to the Z it looks as ugly as hell. I paid the premium for the S2k because it came roofless and at the time had performance to match a Rex - no other reasons.
