Just a heads up. Telstra has new cable and ADSL plans available. Looks like I will gain double the data transfer and a 50% reduction in price. All you have to do is ring them and ask to be changed over according to this article...

Update: You have to go to the BigPond site (My Account) and submit an application. The name of the plan is ...
Cable Unlimited - Uncapped/128
This plan effectively doubles my data transfer limit, eliminates any chance of excess usage fees and saves me $90/month on top.
According to their site to change your plan you need to do it 5 days before end of month so if you do it now the new plan will take effect 1st Jan 04.

Fantastic. I just saved our company $81 per month.
At work we were on 3GB + 5 extra users and paying $87.95 + 5 * $10 = $137.95
Now we are on 10GB + 5 extra users and paying $69.95 + 5 * 1 = $74.95.
And my home cable bill, which the company also pays for, will reduce from $87.95 to $69.95.

Yeah but that's k_Bytes_. I'm talking k_bits_. My connection regularly downloads stuff at its absolute maximum speed of just over 50kBytes per second, so if I go down to a maximum of 20 odd I'll feel it. I also have 2 users online at once fairly often. Then again I could always change it and give it a go for a month.

Why don't they throttle the cable download speeds like they do with ADSL? The only reason I can think of is that there must be a technical hurdle but they do say that you'll be throttled once you reach 10G of downloads. Cable sounds like it's ridiculously fast but unfortunately it is not (yet) available in my building.
