Only if you have your heart set on a new car.
I'm very happy with my S2000 for under $40000.
I've already experienced the disappointment of poor resale value, I'll pass on doing it again. I'd rather buy an MPS in three years rather than lose $15000 in under 3 years.
Having said that, Mazda does have a decent resale, but you only get what someone is willing to pay for it. So long as you buy it for a long period of time, it'd be fine.
It's still a nice car.

I like S2000 a lot. I was offered a black brand new in 2003 for $70K before I settled for my RX-8. I thought I need more seats for my baby. I used the rear seats for a while but now we have another Mazda 3 and I don't need rear seat in my car now
Wish I brought a Honda.

By that logic why not just wait another 3 years and save another $15k?
Why did you pay $40k for an S2000 when you can buy a 10 year old RX7 for that? Or why not get a 20 year old 911 instead?

If you absolutely must have the most powerful "factory" FWD then TWR does hotup kits for the VXR Astra turbo (soon to be sold out here as an HSV model) that produce around 220kw. And HSV have started up the Walkinshaw Performance workshops with superchargers, bigger brakes, etc.
The Polo GTi (with the old Audi/VW turbo 4) would be good with a fiddle too, weren't some crazy Germans claiming that they could get around 300kw from them? And a fiddled with Golf GTi as well I guess.
1400kg for the 3 MPS? Hmm. wonder why they didn't add 100kg and go 4WD (probably canabalise the 6 MPS sales I guess).

As for saving another $15k on the Mazda, I am referring to the value I see that its worth...certainly not $40k, but I would justify paying $25k for it in 3 years even though it would have been used.

Because if you buy a car new it loses a lot more in the first three years than the following three years.
Again, taking that a step further, a 3 year old car will lose a lot more than a 6 year old car. ie. the losses will be lower in the 'next' 3 years, so why not wait 'till then?
Simle answer - because people want things now.
