Default Photo hosting 101

There's been a couple of photo hosting type questions lately so I thought that it'd be a good idea to start a thread that could point people in the right direction and offer them a little assistance in posting their hosted pics here.

First off you need to find a site that will host your photos so that they are stored on someones server. The most important thing that you need to look for is that they allow hotlinking. Hotlinking is when you use the [ img] tags on here (or anywhere else) to display your pics and places like imagestation dont allow it which leaves a red x in place of your pic which defeats the purpose.

Firstly I should advise you that if you become a member here, you not only get free hosting, but you also get access to the hotties forum! (and the political forum )

S2ki also has a really user friendly upload system using java you can drag and dump as many pics at once as you like and you can also select whether or not the album is private which is nice if you wish to share whole albums with others.

But then there are also free hosting sites: (not 100% these are all free as I am getting them from another thread )

www.fotopic.net - free hosting, 10 image/upload, small sig in the bottom left of hosted pic.

http://www.xpphotoalbum.com ........ (recommended by toE)

http://photobucket.com ....... (recommended by Stanley)

http://www.we-todd-did-racing.com - (seems to be the most popular only hosts for certain sites so check if its good for you)

http://www.streetneeds.com/upload.php

http://www.onclickpix.com/?p=home

http://www.photohost.org/

http://www.imageshack.us/index3.php

http://www.freehost.h22a.ca/

Any more people want to suggest, Ill add to the list as we go.

So once you have selected your hosting site you need to navigate it and upload your pics from your hard drive which stores them on the server.

Now you need to find the url for the pic. To do this you can view the pic in full size on the site then right-click and select properties, then copy the location/address (depending on the browser you're using) of the pic.

Now that you have that you can post the pic in a thread by putting the image tags on either side of the URL like this but without the spaces....
[ img ] https://www.s2ki.com/stor/forumshtml/emoticons/cool.gif [ /img ]

Or if you can't manage that click the add reply button and then click the IMG button and paste the URL into the prompt box then hit enter

Questions and suggestions welcome

That's it, just without the [ URL ] bits.

So what you just posted should have been

[ img]http://img53.exs.cx/img53/4407/s2ki_cruise_2_0279.jpg[ /img]

but without the spaces.

Is there an etiquette to the size of a photo that's embedded in a post?

(BTW, that's not in response to anything in recent threads, just something I've wondered for a while...)

Yeah I'd say there is scott. I think that 800x600 is plenty enough even when Im on my desktop and any more than that on the laptop and I have to scroll to read the other posts as well as viewing the pic.
