The D200 is a great piece of work with practically everything an "enthusiast" could ever need. The problem with Nikon is the supply of lenses, so if you're the impatient type, waiting 6 months for certain lenses may bother you a touch. The Canon's availability is a good point and they have a wider range of lenses too. Certain Canon employees hinted the 40D (30D replacement) would not be out until September (when the world's largest photographic show is held). This may be the case for any 5D replacement also, but who knows. Point is research which lenses you might want and stick with that brand...the bodies are similar enough to each other.
I chose the Canon route, buying a 400D until the 40D comes out, but in the mean time getting the best lenses, which is the more than half the battle. Good lenses make even the 400D a very nice weapon.
Hope that helps someone...

I'm on the hunt for a new digital SLR camera and lenses and have spent the last couple of weeks pestering everybody in the business on the Canon 30D (shade under $2000 body only) or the Nikon 200D ($2200 body only)...had my heart set on the Canon and a couple of lenses including the f2.8 70-200 USM (not IS) till I had a good play around with both and the Nikon feels a lot sturdier but a couple of minor short comings....
Excellent comparison review.
Canon 30D or Nikon D200
The full Canon setup I want (body, 2 good lenses, 1.4 teleconverter, extra battery handgrip, flashgun etc) would come to around $6000 and the Nikon to around $8000
Can someone out there help me decide?...I can't

Stop messing around with ideas of cheap lenses.. Once you do that, you always regret it.
If do do get the NIKON, you can always borrow my 8mm, 16mm, 20mm, 24 mm, 28mm, 35 mm 50mm, 85 mm 135 mm, 180 mm, 300mm F2.8 AF-S, 500mm F4 AF-I, and 800mm F5.6 lenses.
If go go CANON, you cant borrow any !
Anyway, shoot in the " RAW" as its the best way.

One of my lenses cost me more than the 400d twin lens kit. I've since gotten a couple more.
The image difference was significant enough to warrant the cost of the lens. Plus they're nice and strong. Canon L glass all the way.
