can anyone explain to me how you can have something which:
1. is allegedly "no reserve"
2. has no bids on it, and
3. has a $5,000 "starting bid"?

does that just mean that the vendor is willing to sell for $5k, no less, and has put a minimum on the opening bid of exactly that amount?

i.e. there IS effectively a reserve?

I think the starting bid is a "vendor's bid" placed by Ebay on behalf of the seller. You could see it as effectively a reserve.

Happens all the time on Ebay fisty, its a gimmick like when car dealerships offer you thousands for your pos car then charge you thousands more for you new car
