I'm not surprised, I nearly bought a 'vette a few years ago from an American living in London. The owner had a false floor in the passenger footwell made up.
Having traveled through many parts of the US by car, I can see why to be honest...take the wrong offramp from a freeway and you can find yourself in some pretty dodgy neighbourhoods. In Australia we dont have places like that...

Seriously though, how much do you actually 'need' a gun in the US? It's supposed to be about the right of the people to bare arms against an oppressive government but in reality it's just the right to feel like a paranoid bad ass. We've got the internet for that.
I mean, what percentage of these guys packing fire power have ever had to use it? Not even to fire it, but just to draw it? And how do you use a gun in self defense? If some guy is exercising his right to bare arms in your general direction how is drawing yet another gun going to diffuse the situation? Do guns stop bullets? I thought they just made them go really fast.
