Automakers Planning Rival Formula One Series
I believe it's been talked about before, but this is the most "formal" discussion I've heard of it:
February 13, 2002
Fiat's Ferrari and DaimlerChrysler's Mercedes-Benz divisions are proceeding with plans to form a rival to Formula One motor racing, the Dow Jones Newswires reported, citing a Fiat spokesman.
The automakers fear that the Kirch Group, a German media company which owns a majority of Formula One, would lessen the appeal of the sport by moving it to pay-TV.
The alternative to the existing F1 series would be called the Grand Prix World Championship, or GPWC, and would be in place by 2008, a year after an agreement which binds the automakers to the current Formula One structure expires.

When the tobacco money disappears (2006 I think) the manufacturers will have more of the financial burden and therefore want more of the TV and associated pie. Unless Bernie does as he threatens and takes F1 away from Europe and North America to Asia where tobacco advertising is unthreatened this may be a large battle. Of course as he gets older it is less likely Bernie will be around to fight this fight but it will be interesting to see him take on the world.s largest automakers.
