Default NASCAR at the Glen

I was working in my garage Saturday and Sunday so I got to watch both races. The only time I actually enjoy NASCAR is when they are at one of the few road courses. I must say both of the races were very enjoyable.

I just watched the Tivo of Sunday's race. It's always fun to watch the NASCAR guys trying to drive on a real racetrack. Boris and Robby finished well as predicted. (nice to see the road guys getting their props) Tony Stewart has really developed into a hell of a driver. He'd never driven a road course before a few years ago, and now he's the dominant road course guy in NASCAR. (Although if Said or Gordon would have started before 39th position, things might have been different)

I'm not a Tony Stewart fan; I think of him as the Rasheed Wallace of NASCAR. He's never been involved in an "incident" that wasn't someone else's fault. I have to admit though, the guy can flat out drive.

[QUOTE=vroom,Aug 17 2005, 11:29 AM] Folks need to acknowledge that the best American driver now appears to be Tony Stewart. Not Jeff Gordon, not Scot Speed (nice to get to watch G2

Rasheed Schumacher?

Sounds funny, but I guess you're right.

On the other hand, it was nice to hear Paul Tracy's frank assesment of his "incident" Sunday:

"I just handed Sebastien the championship!"

It's great to see a team come together when everything clicks and they can run off a string of wins like Tony has. Clearly he is capable of driving and winning in anything he sits in, like many of the real good drivers. I love to watch him race, be it Vets at Daytona or the Home Depo car. Having said that, I would still rank Jeff over Tony. He may not be having one best years in NASCAR but who can forget how impressive he was on his F1 test drive at Indy when he and JPM switched cars.

That was really cool watching Robbie come from like 32 or something to 2 in the Sat Bush race. He does go deep into the corners with his late braking!

Road racing was, is, and always will be the best test of overall natural talent IMO.

Rasheed Great comparo!

Hmm. And did Michael Schumacher ever get involved in an "incident" that was his fault? Maybe it's a characteristic of the breed.
Most top notch drivers - winners - are ruthless. Some do it with a smile and a "I really feel bad for Rusty but we both needed it bad" (Jeff Gordon who I am a fan of), others with nary a comment like Senna, but few are Gentlemen like Jim Clark.

I root for MS - but certainly don't excuse his antics, though he's been pretty clean this year.

BTW - don't know how many read F1 Racing - but this month has an awesome write-up on MS lapping with Peter Windsor in a 575 at Mugello. Those who hate Schumacher can forget it's him and just substitute JPM, Alonso, Kimi, etc - it's a nice read on just how brilliant these guys are. There's also a great piece on Windsor driving a TF104B. I once saw a post on s2ki from someone saying anyone here could just jump in and drive those things fast with all the electronic aids. Sure wish they'd read that article.

on topic - WG was the last race I'll watch until next year...for some reason, NASCAR has finally just lost me (except for the Daytona 500, a Bristol Race, and the two road courses)..And I was watching NASCAR before F1! I
