Its finally official.......
BRASELTON, GA, August 25th, 2009 - Audi Sport Team Joest confirmed today the entry of two Audi R15 TDI factory prototypes into the 12th annual Petit Le Mans powered by MAZDA6 on September 26th. The defending champion hopes to retain its title, but it won't be easy with heated rival Peugeot making a special trip to Road Atlanta as well. It sets up what is arguably the most anticipated North American endurance race in a generation.
Allan McNish and Dindo Capello, winners at Road Atlanta each of the last three years, will drive one diesel-powered prototype. Marco Werner and Lucas Luhr, last year's American Le Mans Series LMP1 champions will drive a second. Mike Rockenfeller will be a reserve driver for Audi Sport Team Joest.
"We are extremely excited to have Audi returning to Petit Le Mans, it's hard to imagine the event without them and our fans have been eagerly awaiting this announcement," said Road Atlanta President Geoff Lee. "Audi's dominance at Road Atlanta is a huge part of Petit Le Mans history, but the competition is stiffer than ever this year. This is like Ali versus Frazier in a race that already attracts the deepest and most elite field of motorsport teams from around the globe."

Wow, very good news indeed! No mention of how they think Audi and Peugeot will stack up against the Acuras. I think after a season of development, the reliability and speed of the Acuras might be up for the challenge of the big boys.

Penske To Run Audi's ALMS Program In 2010?
The latest rumors in the world of sportscar racing has Penske Racing leaving Grand-Am to run a fleet of factory Audi R15s in 2010. Sounds like a great idea, but if Audi Sport's latest acquisitions are added into the equation, those Penske rumors become somewhat less sexy.
Audi Sport has planned a 2010 ALMS campaign similar to its 2009 schedule -- Sebring and Petit Le Mans -- and I'm told the German outfit just purchased Champion Racing's complete inventory of pit equipment to use and store at their own Florida compound. For a manufacturer that's supposedly turning over the keys to Penske, spending a lot of money on Champion's pit equipment (when Penske has owns their own) wouldn't make sense.
