The old (pre-'96) IndyCar series was FAR more entertaining than F1 -- road courses, ovals, multiple engine/chassis/tire suppliers, and genuinely great drivers. Just before the split, they were truly at the top of their game, and at a height of popularity that even rivalled NASCAR. Hell, Mansell moved *from* F1 *to* IndyCar the year *after* he won the F1 Drivers Championship! Can you see Kimi ditching Ferrari and moving to PKV?
