Good place in bay for rebuilds?
Hey all,
My teg has a 25 psi range in compression(155 cyl #1 to 180 #4) and burns 1 Qt of oil/1,100 mi. I drive it 70 mi a day to and from work and don't want to end up stranded in the rain...
My mechanic wanted $2,600 for what he called a "partial" rebuild. Attarco wants $1,025 for a JDM B18B with a $200 core charge and w/o tranny+emissions sensors. I'd be willing to pay a little extra for a rebuild since there is less guessing involved in what I will get(like a box of chocolates!).
So who have you gone to in the bay for a rebuild and what did they charge?

Attarco is the devil. Using them as a baseline of what it will cost for a new engine is a waste of time. I can sell you a broken engine spray painted silver and call it a JDM B18 if you want for 500. Keep calling around.

Have you had a bad experience with them? Don't they do a compression/startup warranty? I'm trying to talk myself out of getting a JDM ITR swap...

word word word. im here so attarco crappppppp. They tried selling me a used 4g63 tranny for my eclipse but instead of selling me a different tranny they put a new snycro in my tranny and gave it back to me! So i was expecting a tranny with a taller gear and what not from a galant but instead they tried to pull a fast one on me. i would never trust them. a great machine shop is victory on snell ave in san jose. they are expensive but they know there stuff! Going the Jdm route has a lot of migrains and is not fun. you can try a good buddy of mine his name is Jeff Sloan. www.hybridautomotive.com he is a complete whiz but since the arrival of his baby he has slown down. email him and he should get back to you. hope this helps. oh yeah attarco sucks!!

While 25psi range is not the greatest... it is not that bad. I ran a pickup truck motor with 125psi compression across the board with no oil consumption.
Long story short... it might be a little slow, but it sounds like if you are on a budget, just get the head freshen'd up. I bet your valve guides are shot. You can shave 20 off the head also and get some more compression before the motor officially dies.
Any local shop can do the work on the head. I would recommend Precision Honda in Pleasanton (462-7440). They have done wonders with my parents Honda's since 1985.

I wouldn't say I'm on a tight budget really. I'm just trying to figure out if the car is worth fixing...(Needs body work too)
Right now, I'm planing to see how the oil burn rate changes or not. I think it's been the same for at least 10k mi so, I guess I could just see how much longer it goes(102K miles of abuse). Might as well wait for the burning to get worse and see how the castrol GTX helps...
What I'd like to do is find a good deal on a shell and swap in a JDM ITR.
I'll see what Precision charges for rebuilds.

Called Precision and they quoted $3,500 for a rebuild. I was like, "you know that's more than the motor right?", He says, "yeah". He wouldn't give me a price for just fixing the rings without taking it apart.
I guess I'll run this thing till it blows and then maybe spring for the ITR motor...

$3500.. parts and labor? That is still a rip off.
I figured you were going to take the head off and give it to them to freshen it up. It shouldn't be more than $200 if you just have new valve guides installed, the seats recut, and the head milled .010 or .020"
Anytime you are looking at someone else do the motor exchange for you... be prepared for money. Good luck.
I say buy a Helms and experiment. If you can work on the S... the Teg is a piece of cake!
