Default Need Help with AT&T!

Hi Everyone

Here's the story, I currently have my cell service with Sprint and want to switch to AT&T and get an iphone. My current number was initially set up in Wisconsin (262 area code) and i'm now living in California. AT&T is telling me that they cannot transfer my number because it is out of "market area" and my only option would be to get a new number. Does anyone know how to get around this????

Thanks

*sorry if this is a re-post, I tried searching on S2ki but the search feature isn't working

Are you trying to do this in a store? Try calling their 800 number and see if they can do the transfer over the phone.

I had the same problem when I transferred my NYC number here, from TMO to AT&T (also for an iPhone). It can be done, but it does take some work on their end. They basically have to temporally exchange a number from your area code with one in their system for this area, perform a switch here then give you that number temporally. Once you have that number, they can then port your old number, then release your old number. This can NOT be done at the retail store. Have the person at the retail store call up support from the store. It CAN be done.

you can't buy an iphone over the phone, it has to be either online or in-store

Try calling an AT&T store in the 262 area code and see if they can do it. What about at the Apple store?

You can buy the iPhone at a local store and ask them to do what I described above.

Hey Des,

I went through the same thing you went through when i got my iphone. I wanted to keep my 626 number in my 415 area code, I called them in order to get this done. All they needed was an address to refer to from the area of your original number. I hope you get it all sorted out!
