Default Question about helmets

Ok, I'm gonna join NASA soon, and they require helmets. So, they say to get a motorcycle helmet, but I have no idea about how to choose them and where to buy them.

So, any good stores in the Bay Area taht I can look at? Is it cheaper to shop online? What should I look in a motorcycle helmet for racing (since its not really the same sport)? Any good brands?

I have a $100 HJC deal from a motorcycle shop. Black, boring, and top safety ratings. The one feature it has is a fully removable clear face section (much cheaper than replacing the whole helmet if it just gets scratched).

I wouldn't worry too much about differences between the sports. Movability, visibility, and protection are very important to both.

think the main diff is the fire resistance on car helmets. HJC is a decent helmet for the price. online is cheaper, but not sure if sizes are standard - probably better to try it on first.

you should go to cycle gear www.cyclegear.com, they are a chain and have stores all over the bay area. otherwise i only know stores in sf only. you should buy something cheap and comfortable for nasa. helmets range from 80 - 600 bucks. i would just make sure it's comfortable and that your vision range is enough. at the back base of the helmet, there should be at least a DOT sticker, DOT and snell would be much better.

Be aware that SA95 helmets expire sometime next year.

nope! it is valid until 2009, certification stickers are 5 year intervals. SCCA helmet requirement (for autocross at least) is current or 2 preceding standards.

example: in 2003 the current Snell cert is 2000 or 1995 or 1990 .... came 2005, current is 2005 or 2000 or 1995, then 2010 current is 2010 or 2005 or 2000.... 1995 is not valid in 2010.

same with NASA, im a NASA member too and for 2005, til 2009 SA95 is OK. NASA requires SA only and not M.
