Holy Crap that was a fun drive: the scenery second-to-none. Pics coming. . . honest. . .

Big thanks to everyone that showed up. BIG shout-out to wu-tang for driving out to Genoa to meet us.

Great drive, big thanks to Unkie Trunkie for organizing and to everyone else for participating. We had incredible weather on the drive up along route 88 (Carson Pass), but we split up on the way back. I elected to take route 108 (Sonora Pass) which definitely turned out to be an adventure. Here are some photos I took over the course of the two days of driving...

Along route 88, the skies were simply superb:

Reached the Carson Pass!

Lunch was at the Country Store in Genoa, as recommended by wu tang. They have very good sandwiches and a rather interesting selection of hot sauces:

After lunch, we walked across the street to the Genoa Bar, "Nevada's Oldest Thirst Parlor". The building was built in 1853 and has a colorful history. I forgot to take photos, but maybe somebody else will post up a few...

On the way back from Reno, I took 580 to 395. As I drove south, it was somewhat disconcerting to see dark clouds to the east. Just before turning onto route 108, I thought I might just avoid the storm...

However, I ran into a couple of very brief light showers as I worked my way up the Sonora Pass. The roads were much more twisty than route 88, and there was a decent amount of loose gravel present that limited cornering speeds. There were also no dedicated passing lanes. Luckily, the traffic was light and I eventually reached the Pass. The skies were mostly grey but the snowy views were still impressive:

A little further down the road, elevation dropping:

A rare glimpse at blue sky:

Minutes after the above photo was taken, I heard thunder coming from the west. I put up the top and it began to pour. For the next 30 minutes it didn't let up. Then it stopped suddenly and the road became dry. It would have been nice to have the same weather as the day before, but it was interesting in its own way. Thanks again to all that were able to go!
