Well, well my antenna was stolen a couple of days ago and I didn't think it was a big deal - they got that, ok, $20 bucks I'll buy a new one. Well, a couple of days later I kept hearing this new whistling, wind noise inside the cabin with the windows up (it just started raining) and I couldn't figure out where it was coming. I kept looking around the top by the windows but couldn't find where the noise was coming from. Then I looked directly above me and there is was - the light. There was a six inch slash in the top, very straight, like a knife. No rain was leaking in, but you guys know the feeling when something like this is done to your car, the sinking feeling in your stomach, the anger... I'm over all that now but I have a couple of questions for you guys.

First, for this six inch slash, will my insurance cover for a whole new top or will they patch the slash up?
My insurance is with State Farm, full coverage on everything, deductible on comprehensive is $500.

If I do have to patch it, where in the Bayarea is a good place to get it patched?

I heard that a whole new top will be about 3g's. Can I get the insurance to cover for a new top, and take that money to get a hard top? hehe I'm willing to live with a patched up top if I can get the Mugen Fiberglass one out of it.

That sucks dude, I hope all comes out well for you. I don't know of any specific place but I would check upholstery shops or maybe even Lotts Auto Stereo in Santa Cruz, when I had my stereo installed there were quite a few miata's that had new tops.

Sorry to hear of the slash.

Can you give us some hints where the car was parked when the vandalism occurred. I'll make sure I never set foot (uh, I mean wheel) in that neighborhood ever. Thanks.

Sorry to hear that Huy...If it can be patched I doubt that insurance would cough up the $$$ for the whole roof...Good luck with the insurance.

It was parked at my friends house which I have been hanging out at for the past six years with no problems. I thought the neighborhood was nice and safe, quiet place. Houses there are about 7-900,000 now so pretty nice houses. Guess not. San Jose is getting more ghetto everyday... Guess I'll see what State Farm says tomorrow.

That is a real bummer. I'm sorry to hear the news and I can understand your anger and frustration. I would bet that a fix or a replacement of the top is a judgement call of the adjuster and/or your agent, depending on the relationship that you have with them. I would press for a "like new" top and I bet that it will happen. Good luck. If the tear is in an area that gets stretched or folded when the top comes down and up, you may have an extra reason for pushing for a new one. It is likely that a patch in that area wouldn't last. If you don't have an history of frivolous claims then your position will be that much better...

My experience with State Farm is that they error in your favor. This whole thing does really suck. I hope you catch the rat bastards. This for me is another reason why it would be nice to move back to my home state of Kentucky and be done with the mess here in the Bay. And besides, there are a lot of uninhabited roads there that would be great to drive in the S2K... and yes, they are paved and without covered wagons.

Sorry to hear about your vandalism. I can't imagine it will cost $3,000 to replace your top (maybe with the hardware) - the top only could be less than $1,000 based on what I've heard.

Try this place:

Auto Dynamics
2555 Lafayette Street, #101
Santa Clara, CA 95050
408-492-1000

I haven't used them or seen their work but they're recommended by Custom Alignment, a great alignment/suspension shop in Mtn. View.

Good luck!

Sorry to hear about your slashed top dude. I guess it just goes to chow it CAN happen anywhere. I think State Farm will do their best and usually will do a replacment. Try Bascom Upholstery in Santa Clara. Many dealerships use them for top replacements and upholstery work. Try and see what they say. Good luck
