Another cellphone question, porting number
so i am switching from cingular to verizon. i jsut got my new phone in the mail from amazon. i did the *228 thing. and then when i called the 1-800 number to port my old phone, the place was closed for the day.
so i wonder, can i use this already programmed phone number for a while before i port my number? like say for the 30 days within my money back guarantee period. i have my reasons for waiting a bit, id like to try it out and im not sure i really want to drop cingular and its worth paying for 2 bills for a month to try.
anyone know?

you can but you got 14 days with verizon in order go back to cingular and with no ETF
unless they gave you a temporary number to start off with then yes you can.. but you have 3 days to get refunded on any activation charges... you can use that temporary number as long as you want but rest assured you can still port your number to replace that temporary number any time
sorry about not replying so soon my verizon friend was a flake to forget him

ok, so let me get this straight.
even if i port my number asap, i have 14 days to switch back without penalty from cingular?
and i do have some number already assigned to the new verizon phone i have. i didnt call the 1800 number to activate it i, or whatever it is that happens. its different than the number i need to call to port. so im not even sure the phone works. (hey i just checked, and it does work! i just called my cingular phone. i didnt call any 1800 numbers as directed, just the #228. odd...)
so if it works, then i can keep using it. (right?) and whenever i feel like it i can switch the number on the verizon phone. (right?) and it will close my cingular account, which i have 14 days to reopen if i really want to go back.
so yeah, still a little confused. thanks doaner.

14 days apply to verizon services which you can terminate their services within 14 days of activating services without getting a ETF
sorry I was clear enough about it.. but once you port your number over to Verizon BAM* ETF from cingular

oh i get it now.
so basically i have 14 days to figure out if i want to STAY with verizon. (i thought it was 30 days...)
but i dont have to port my number immediately. so i should at least wait those 14 days before i FINALLY COMMIT and port my number from cingular. otherwise, im stuck with the ETF from verizon if i change my mind from verizon.
and 14 days starts from today, when i dialed #228, not when i ordered it thru amazone right? it took a few extra days over the new years to get it.

its the time you purchased the phone so be careful because your 14 could be coming up... the #228 is just OTA (over the air) programming just to use your phone.. only cingular and sprint has 30 day return policy
