its quite simple: want to make column x,y,z the color grey if say column d = N
highlight column x. y & z

Conditional Formatting -> highlighted cell rules -> Cell Value equal to N -> custom format (change the cell fill color to gray)

thats on excel 07. I havent used the older version in a while, but its the same basic idea

thats not going to work because it doesn't include column D.
that'll only work if Columns X,Y,Z contain the Value N.. in my case, i want columns X,Y,Z to be shaded grey if Column D has a value of N.

Highlight the range X,Y,Z you want to use.

Home -> Conditional Formatting -> New Rule -> Use a formula to determine which cells to format

In the "Format values where this formula is true" box, type the following:

=$D1="N"

If you are not starting with D1, then change the 1 to whatever row # you want to begin with.

Click Format and set the Fill to whatever color you want.

That works for Excel 2007.

sorry, i misread your question.

Highlight columns x,y, and z

Conditional Formatting -> use formula to determine which cells to format -> =$D1="N" -> format -> change fill color

Key part is make sure the row number is not held constant, there should only be a $ in front of the D.
