Default Best ways to back up your hard drive?

My friend got a virus on her computer and her whole hard drive was shot. I got nervous and went out and bought an 80GB external hard drive. What is the best way to back up my computer's hard drive onto this external hard drive? I've heard about software that can basically take a "picture" of my hard drive, copy it onto the external and then if, god forbid, anything happens to my computer, I can just copy everything from the external hard drive onto a new hard drive and all my profiles, applications, preferences, etc. will be the same. I feel like just attaching the external hard drive to my PC isn't enough..

All help is appreciated! Thanks!!

What about the Backup accessory in the system tools that comes with Windows XP (assuming you're using XP, if not, I'd still like to know)?

I haven't tried it, but it looks like it should do the job too.

What/where is this? I am using XP. This might be a good alternative until I can the other software. Thanks!

XP Home does NOT load the Backup utility when it is installed, but XP Pro does.

But I have heard that XP Pro's backup misses some files. I would not use it...
