Once he hit the wires and the wing departed, he had no control....gravity/fate took over at that point.

Glad to hear it wasn't a pilot error issue.
Even if the gear didn't come down, or didn't lock, it's never fatal unless the pilot panics. Usually it's some bent metal and engine/prop damage. Usually just really expensive.....so your girl wasn't ever in peril.
Where does she fly out of? I'm out of Whiteman in Pacoima.

She flies out of Montgomery Field Airport in San Diego. She's going to start work as an instructor after taking her CFi so she's pretty excited.
I stay off of Terra Bella and Glenoaks and as kids my brother and I would always walk around the planes in Whiteman Airport. Do you fly planes as a hobby or are you an instructor?
I told my girl about your RV-6 and simply responded with, "Lucky!"

Funny that she said "Lucky" as that's been my callsign for about 10 years (I got that after I took a hawk thru the windshield and survived, plus a few other adventures).
Story of my birdstrike at:

As for me, it's just a great hobby. I've been flying for 20 years (1500hrs/instrument rated)
If she'd like a ride in the RV, PM me and we can see if we can work it out. I'm sure she'd enjoy it.

Good on your girl for wanting to instruct. Tough way to pay the bills though....

After reading your birdstrike story, you truly are lucky. I'm thinking of the Mythbusters Chicken Gun episode!
I'll let her know about the ride in the RV-6. Thank you.
