Test Only Smog experiences?
It's come time for a test only smog inspection for my integra.
Just wondering if anyone knows how thorough smog shops or test only shops are at checking the car/engine before the inspection. It's been so long since my last test only that i can't remember what they would look at, or even their procedures.
My car isn't a gross polluter or anything, on the contrary, it'll pass the sniffer no problem. I have all emissions equipment, no CELs, etc. The only thing that makes my engine swap illegal is the technicality that it is a year older than my chassis. A 1996 motor in a 1997 chassis. CA law states motor swaps must be the same year or newer.
I'm debating on taking it to a regular test only shop and paying $50 or so, or paying 3 times as much to get a "special" smog.
When they hook up the smog equipment to the OBD2 port, does it mention anything about the year? (1996 ecu/motor).
Do they visually check the VIN# on the block or year stamp on the head?
I'm also worried that the computers might say Non-vtec motor while the technician might notice the vtec lettering on the valve cover and get suspicious...
Because if they don't check any of this, i think i could just roll in there and test the car and it'll pass no problem. Any help is appreciated!

as long as your ecu and sensors are from your original vehicle, you should pass smog w/o any problem. in case you don't pass the smog, CA will pay your vehicle up to $3,000 to impound away for good.

in that case, you won't pass the smog. the computer is going to read your vehicle as 96 rather than 97. you'll pass the actual smog itself, but you probably have to working something out w/ visual inspection.
depends on the smog guy... if he's cool about it, he'll probably let you go.. kind of like carb#....
