Default 1997 Viper GTS

I have always been fond of the Blue/white Viper GTS. I love the looks, they are easily modified and from the research I have done seem to be pretty reliable. Does anyone have seat time in a viper? Is it fun to drive on the road or simply too much car?

It may be a great weekend/track car for the price of a new vette. Granted the new vette is similar in terms of performacnce and over 10 years newer but I perfer the rarity and looks of the Viper.

Am I crazy? Anyone else like to see a Viper in their collection one day?

Yeah, iwill have a viper one day. I want to drive it thought so ABS is important to me. Also, the 08 or 06 with some mods is just a much better car to me. And the prices of the Gen3s are really nice. You can get a almost new 03 for that price.

I've driven an 02 viper on the road. It was a lot of fun. They are geared fairly high so on a sunny day i didn't have any traction issues, but I wasn't standing on it every chance I got either. It does tend to spin a lot more at lights then an S2000 or my evo!

03's for sale:

It's a lot more car for the money, but some people don't like the look. In person, they look great, IMO.

I think you're crazy for buying a 10 year old Dodge. Its a crazy car and it looks great, but imo some things are better left untouched, or in this case, unbought.

I own a 1999 Viper GTS..

don't listen to any of these yahoos...

Yes, they are easily modded. You can go from 450 horse to 500 pretty easily. Two that are necessary. Short shifter (the stock one has a long throw) and exhaust (stock exhaust sounds terrible)

They are actually quite reliable. Easy to work on, and the parts are pretty inexpensive. I do my fluid changes and haven't had any problems doing so.

I will say, if you are thinking of it as a weekend/track car.. fine, but if you think you will drive it regularly, don't bother. Its not a DD friendly car.

The 1996-97 GTS in Blue/White is the most desireable colors of all vipers. (red being the least popular)
But there is one bit of information I would need to tell you whether its a good deal or not... MILEAGE..

PM me if you have any questions.

$45k seems pretty high for a '97 Viper.

^97s are very collectible because they are the last forged internal vipers. The years following have been named cream-puffs by viper-nerds! Also, first year of the GTS I believe or maybe that was 1996.

As far as being a 'yahoo' I don't really think I said anything 'yahooish'. All I said is I prefer the improvements on the GEN3 and they can be had for the same or less then nice Gen 2 examples.

Figures I would like one of the most desirable Vipers. This modified one caught my eye.

They look awesome, sounds awesome, and are a blast to drive.
But don't even think about using as a DD(I'm pretty sure you're considering as a weekend toy).
The heat inside the cabin is also pretty extreme, not that it's something that'll keep me from buying one.

If you like it, I'd say go for it.

Thanks for all the replies. I think its one very notorious car. Many posters and die cast models to support this.
