2002 WRX wagon?
The tranny should be fine. One thing with Subie a tranny is that it feels a little soft. Shifting should be really smooth, even with 70k miles on it. But, at 70k, the clutch will be really stiff compared to a brand new or recently replaced clutch.
Don't be fooled by the stiffness of the clutch, it almost feels like it's aftermarket!!

GREAT CAR!!! Subaru's are very well built and solid.
With the 03's and under, the tranny is pretty week, so do absolutely no hard launching. For take-offs, you need to feather the clutch out.... For 04 and up, the WRX's tranny has been reinforced and is a bit stronger, but not as rock solid as say, an STI tranny.
Anyway, on a stock WRX, don't expect a huge boost when it comes in. With 3 cats on the WRX, the exhaust is very restricted and the 12psi of boost is very casual.
Having come from an 03 WRX sedan, I highly recommend this car! My fiance has the 04 WRX wagon, and I still love driving that thing!

I am not too worried about performance. I have to drive over the mountains quite often so having enough power to go up the hills and pass is all I am concerned with. And of course handling in the snow! Reliability is huge for me too, of course.
Say I do need a new clutch, are they expensive for the Subu's?
Not much more expensive than any other car, especially if you go with an OEM one. It might cost around $400 for parts and labor......
But I could be way off as I never had my clutch replaced!!! That's just my estimate off the top of my head considering the price of an OEM clutch and $75/hour for labor...
Oh, and on mountain driving, this thing will be great!!! AWD is awesome for that!!!

I'm a former owner of a 2004 WRX and 2004 WRX STI, since pretty much it is a WRX not an STI I would say look for sinchros being worn out on 1st gear, just the whole drive train, turbos on these cars are not a big thing to worry about, they are watercooled. Now was this female owned, or owned by and adult or younger person, that will also reflect on the amount of abuse the car might have. If you need more help or any more information on Subies, PM me or become a member of NASIOC.COM and you will find all the answers you need.

Great site for Subie info!
I had a wrx wagon before the s2000. Look for the throw out bearing, hood paint (on '02). I would go for as stock as possible. The best bangs for the buck are the downpipe, blow off valve and performance filter. tailpipe did nothing for perfomance, but sounded cool.

J/KFor me, it was either black or silver, and my WRX was silver, so I went for a change in style and went black!
